5 Style Tips and 5 Easy Bets to make at Del Mar

It's a two-fer for this weeks blog!

Opening Day at the Del Mar Race track is this Friday July 15th. If you are a clothes horse than you probably started planning your outfit weeks ago and are ready to show off your very best race-ready digs.

Here are 5 style tips to keep in mind. (Reprise 2015)

1) If you are wearing white socks, we don't wanna see em.

2) If you're gonna wear a set of suspenders, you wear that set of suspenders. If you are going to wear a belt, well, wear that belt. But don't ya go wearin the two of em at the same time.

3) Far better that your bowtie compliment your pocket square or your lapel flower than that it match it dead on. Just try to keep it all in the same color family.

4) Get a good hat. Period. We are partial to the Panama, but a nice Pork Pie or the classic Boater Straw always looks smashing!

5) If you are going to wear your shirt open at the collar and with no Bowtie, well then you may as well just run right out into the middle of the traffic on the 5.... No, no, no sorry about that, what we meant to say was if you are going to wear your collar open, make sure you have some properly sized collar stays and make your pocket square count!

(Secret Rule #6) If you are winning a gang of money on those ponies... it don't matter what you're wearin'.)

Speaking of winning a gang of money.  Below are the most common bets at the track. And if you are intimidated by the folks behind the counter, here is how to word said bets...

"I'd like $10 on 4 (this means horse number 4) to win."

Or

"I'd like a two dollar Trifecta on 1, 5, and 7"

Here are 5 basic bets...

1) Show

What: Your horse must finish 1st, 2nd, 3rd; modest payoffs.

2) Place
What: Your horse must finish 1st or 2nd; pays better than show.

3) Win
What: Your horse must finish 1st; payoff determined by your horse's odds.

4) Exacta
What: Your horses must finish 1st, 2nd, and 3rd in exact order.

5) Trifecta
What: Your horses must finish 1st, 2nd, and 3rd in exact order.

Good Luck!!
